RosieQueen Latifah was born Dana Elaine Owens on March 18, 1970, in Newark, New Jersey. The second daughter of Lance and Rita Owens, Latifah is best known for her political activism, acting abilities and a talent for rhyme. A Muslim cousin has given Latifah the name "delicate, sensitive" at the age of eight years old. Latifah began singing with the Shiloh Baptist Church's choir located in Bloomfield, New Jersey. Her first performance was when she sang "Home" as the character of Dorothy in a show of The Wizard of Oz at St. Anne's Parochial School. Latifah was in the footsteps of her mother, who was in constant contact with the music and students. Mark James, the local disc jockey was invited by Latifah's mother to perform at the dance.
